Federation Internationale de Football Association U-17 WC: Brazil, Mali fired up for bronze playoff”

Brazil beat Mali 2-0 on Saturday to claim the Bronze medal at the 2017 Under-17 World Cup in India.

After a goalless first half, Alan scored in the 55th minute, before substitute Yuri Alberto widened the margin two minutes from the end of regulation time of the third-fourth play-off watched by more than 56,000 spectators at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan.

The 56,432 Kolkata fans turned up at the Salt Lake Stadium to make the Federation Internationale de Football Association U-17 World Cup the most attended tournament in its history but the team, who was defeated by England in the semi-finals, failed to live up to their billing.

In the whole match, Brazil had just three shots on target while Mali, who showed more attacking intent, had 10 shots.

This is the second time the Selecao boys have finished third after the inaugural edition in 1985 in China.

Brazil were third time unlucky as their forwards showed poor finishing against England at the most crucial stage of the tournament which spelled doom for them.

Mali made two changes with captain Mohamed Camara coming in for Cheick Oumar Doucoure and Mamadi Fofana replacing Abdoulaye Diaby as a central defender in the starting XI.

Amadeu also revealed what he said at the huddle just at the start of the game, saying that the Brazilian way to play a match like this was "to live" now that they had lost their semi-final. Both waited for the other to commit mistakes.

Mali continued pushing Brazil deep inside their half, and nearly broke through when Camara and N'Diaye worked their way into the box, but were denied by the latter's shot being blocked in the 34th minute. In the very next minute, Salam Jiddou's right-footer missed the target after Hadji Drame had done the spadework.

Mali skipper Camara had a shot in the 26th minute and Brazil goalie Gabriel Brazao had to dive to his left to save it.

Midway into the second half, Brazao looked dehydrated and had to receive treatment on the ground. Within seconds, though, Alan would attempt a low shot when he sprung the offside trap, and his shot was half-saved by goalkeeper Youssouf Koita and rolled into the Mali net, bringing the Salt Lake Stadium to its feet.
