Impeached VP of Clemson University's SGA says vote reflects racism

Impeached VP of Clemson University's SGA says vote reflects racism”

The student senate at Clemson University has voted to impeach the student government's vice president, Jaren Stewart, who refused to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance.

But as the Associated Press has noted, the action follows the participation of Stewart, who is black, in a protest at a Student Senate meeting in which several student government members remained seated during the Pledge of Allegiance.

Student Senator Miller Hoffman, who is white, introduced the resolution to impeach Stewart, citing a leaked document describing alleged misconduct. Hoffman has also denied that the move had anything to do with Stewart's pledge protest or his race.

"When is the last time that the people who want him impeached showed up to an event that was held by black students union (unintelligible) or any other black student organization on this campus?" Miller Hoffman, who filed the articles of impeachment on October 23, notes The Tiger.

Hoffman said Stewart was sacked from his position as a resident assistant and was charged with trespassing. "When is the last time you stood up and represented for us?".

"Such a narrative is without evidence and completely untrue", he said in a statement.

When Stewart and other students held their peaceful protest, he was quoted at the time by media outlet Anderson Independent Mail as stating: "The social exclusion and isolation is very real and very damaging to students here".

"This whole thing is FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) protected and thus our policy as a university is not to comment on confidential student records", Sikes said.

Clemson Undergraduate Student Body Vice President Jaren Stewart will face an impeachment trial after a procedural error, along with an intense, three-hour senate debate. "We deserve that, right?" an unidentified woman said during the meeting. Hoffman said that with the facts that he found, along with the allegations, that Stewart could be unfit for his job as CUSG VP.

"They've already made up their minds because of this trope of the villainous African-American male", said Stewart, adding: "There's a deeper systemic issue in which people are choosing what they want to hear, choosing what they want to believe exists and that's why sitting for the pledge was so important".
