Japan eyes Aust talks on China's Silk Road

Japan eyes Aust talks on China's Silk Road”

Citing growing worldwide partnerships, India on Friday said it was "open" to working with partner countries for regional issues that are "relevant".

India said it is "open to working with like-minded countries on issues that advance our interests and promote our viewpoint" and added that it was "not rigid in this regard".

Tillerson said the United States offer for India, Japan and Australia to be the four anchors of security and peace in the Indo-Pacific region was also an attempt to move relations with India to the "next level".

Reading out from a prepared statement, Kumar said: "Because of our broad acceptability as a country, there are a number of such initiatives, which are trilateral in nature". We are not rigid this regard.

"We're looking at a working-level quadrilateral meeting in the near term, but again, I think the idea is how do we bring together countries that share these same values to reinforce these values in the global architecture", Alice Wells, acting head of the South and Central Asia bureau at the state department, told reporters.

However, the comment indicated that such regional partnerships will have to suit Indian interests and said, "As far as we are concerned, we have an open mind to cooperate with countries with convergence but obviously on an agenda which is relevant to us".

Swaraj, Tillerson and Kono, last month held the second India-US-Japan trilateral dialogue on the sideline of the United Nations General Assembly in NY.

Aimed at countering the Chinese One Belt One Road Initiative that India has objected to citing concerns over the initiative undermining India's territorial integrity as it passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Japan is all set to propose a similar cross-continent building of high-speed roads and ports from Asia to Africa. "Japan is one such nation", he had said. India has roped in Japan as a key partner in its Bay of Bengal/Act East policy, not only to work on connectivity issues, but also reassure smaller neighbours, which may have been less welcoming of India alone. Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and his Japanese and Australian counterparts held the third India-Japan-Australia trilateral dialogue in Canberra earlier this year.
