Bottas accuses Verstappen of wrecking his lap

Although the stewards decided that Verstappen had not impeded Bottas, the Finn remains adamant that his first run was ruined by the Dutchman. However, a further investigation into the matter cleared the Red Bull Racing youngster of any wrongdoing.

Bottas immediately returned to the pits, feeling Verstappen had ruined his lap, and the stewards quickly confirmed they would be investigating the Red Bull driver after the session.

"The driver of vehicle 33 [Verstappen] was clearly aware from the team radio and using his mirrors that auto 77 [Bottas] was approaching on a hot lap", read an official statement.

"Someone suddenly came close to me and I pulled inside immediately at the exit of Turn 12, so the auto behind could be in completely free air".

Mercedes' Bottas remained on a flying lap and came across Verstappen, peeling to the right-hand side of the circuit as per the racing line before locking up and going deep at the next corner.

"The drivers of vehicle 33 did move slowly from the racing line which could have affected auto 77, but the stewards do not consider this as impeding".

"The driver of auto 33 did move slowly from the racing line which could have affected vehicle 77, but the Stewards do not consider this as impeding".

When asked if he felt Verstappen deserved a penalty for impeding him, Bottas said: "I don't know".

"I don't know what the rulebook exactly says". It's not up to me.

"So, for me it compromised my lap and then I had only one shot in Q3, at the end".

However, Verstappen was quick to proclaim his innocence, telling Sky Sports: "There is no incident, for me".

"It's his own problem if he out-brakes himself at the next corner", he reasoned.

Valtteri Bottas will start from fourth on the grid for the Mexican Grand Prix on Sunday, but the Finn admitted to being disappointed not to have been fighting for pole position. (I was aware he was there and) that's why I moved to the inside. I had to go run very close to him in Turn 12, so then you naturally lose time - and then as well my approach to 13 was compromised a little bit with the line.
