CT lawmakers overwhelmingly pass "historic" budget

CT lawmakers overwhelmingly pass

The state House today gave final legislative approval to a state budget meant to address a $3.5-billion deficit. Following the House vote, Malloy's spokeswoman said the governor appreciated lawmakers' work, but he and his staff need to carefully review the almost 900-page document.

Lawmakers - including those in the governor's Democratic Party - said they had hoped to get a veto-proof majority of two-thirds.

But according to a spokesperson for the governor's office, a problem with wording regarding the hospital tax could cost the state up to $1 billion in federal money. She said staff will continue to analyze the legislation, "weighing its merits and faults, so that the governor can arrive at an informed and carefully considered decision regarding his support". "We did compromise in areas, but overall I think it's a good budget that will move CT forward".

The budget is nearly four months late, thanks in part to the veto Gov. Dan Malloy (D-Conn.) issued on the GOP budget last month. "We right now have no budget, we have no revenue coming in, and we have a $3.5 billion deficit", said Democratic Majority Leader Mitt Ritter. But leaders, acknowledging that everyone has something to dislike in a compromise budget, heaped praise for the bipartisan product that emerged earlier in the week and easily passed the Senate. We'll continue to make steps toward putting CT in a better place as we continue to do the work Republican leaders neglected for decades.

"Nothing should ever be stagnant - the state's not stagnant, the budget shouldn't be stagnant and if we can find a way to move CT forward, then we have to go in that direction", said Senate Republican President Pro Tempore Len Fasano (R-North Haven).

State Sen. Kevin Kelly (R-Monroe) released the following statement regarding the budget that was approved in the state Senate in Hartford. "At the same time it reduces future spending by implementing a spending cap and bonding cap among other structural changes".
