Cuba: mystery attacks that sickened United States diplomats

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez dismissed allegations of any kind of attack as "totally false".

USA officials have said the attacks - which affected at least 24 diplomats at diplomatic residences and hotels in Cuba from November 2016 to August 2017 - may have been carried out with some kind of covert acoustic device.

The Cuban government has denied through its foreign ministry that it aimed sonic attacks against United States embassy staff in its capital of Havana.

Rodriguez also said Cuba is making it easier for the children of Cubans in the United States to get Cuban citizenship, and said Havana will allow some Cubans who left the country illegally to return.

He slammed the allegations as "political manipulation aimed at damaging bilateral relations".

While the United States has not formally accused Cuba of carrying out what it says are attacks that have caused hearing loss and cognitive issues in its diplomats, President Donald Trump said last week Havana was responsible.

However given the allegations "there has been a serious deterioration in the relationship between both governments and both countries", he said.

Cuba insists it has shown good will by letting FBI investigators visit the island three times this year to investigate.

In response to the attacks, the U.S. withdrew most of its diplomatic personnel from Havana and advised the Americans not to visit the island while by way of reprisal it ordered the departure of 15 Cuban diplomats from their embassy in Washington, joining another two who were expelled last May.

He said Cuban citizens in the United States would no longer need to have a special review of their Cuban passports to rehabilitate them before traveling to the island.

The U.S. government has also begun restricting issuance of travel visas to Cuba and warning applicants about the sonic attacks.

He decried having to travel overseas to "perform painful face-to-face interviews in the era of digital communications".

Cuban government officials accused Trump this week of slandering their country.

A doctor on the investigative team, Manuel Villar, said Washington has refused to share the medical records of those affected or let USA doctors talk to Cuban ones.

The Cuban documentary said there is no evidence to confirm what may have caused these symptoms.

"These changes inspire gratitude and bring Cubans overseas closer to Cuban government", said the legal assistant.
