IPhone-based portable ultrasound machine can help detect cancer easily at home

IPhone-based portable ultrasound machine can help detect cancer easily at home”

But if you're in medicine, you don't want it to be about yourself.

John Martin, the chief medical officer for Butterfly Network was testing out a device called Butterfly iQ, a small imaging machine for ultrasounds compatible with the iPhone. For now, it can only be purchased by a licensed healthcare practitioner or facility in the US that's permitted to perform ultrasounds.

He'd been having an uncomfortable feeling of thickness on his throat.

The surgeon, John Martin noticed Black-and grey images of the ultrasound and found a three-centimeter patch of joined mass which he saw did not belong there. But Butterfly's machine instead uses 9,000 tiny drums combined on a semiconductor chip.

The mass Dr. Martin discovered with his Butterfly IQ turned out to be cancer.

A big reason the device is much cheaper than a traditional ultrasound machine is most of the technology is housed within a microchip. The Butterfly IQ will go on sale in the US later this year, priced at $1,999.

"The sooner we make a diagnosis, the sooner we start treatment", said Martin. "This gives you the ability to do everything at the bedside: you can pull it out of your pocket and scan the whole body".

Taking an ultrasound can be an expensive process, requiring huge machines and specialized technicians to operate them. In emergency rooms, doctors use it to quickly look inside a patient's heart, lungs, and stomach without x-rays. Usually, the sound waves are generated by a vibrating crystal. The portable ultrasound will ship exclusively in early 2018 for $2,000. "It seems like they'll need to drive the volume of ultrasound scanners far beyond what it is now", says Richard Przybyla, cofounder of Chirp Microsystems. And a real life example of this has taken place with a portable ultrasound device that works with the iPhone.

At the very beginning, no one can deny this simplification of medical technologies that normally come in complicated to carry and handle, quite cumbersome sizes, are advances to take off the hats - I mean, who could really envision that an iPhone could detect cancer ever? To that end, the company is hoping to pair the product with AI software that will allow a novice to position the probe correctly and even interpret the images.

Eventually, the Butterfly IQ is a device that could be used in an ambulance, or at home. These are some cancer tests you should know about.

Luxury phone making giants, iPhone has developed a medical based device which detects cancer in humans.
