Jason Kenney won the nomination of the conservative Party kingdom of Alberta”

Jason Kenney has been elected the first leader of the United Conservative Party.

Under the party's plan, there is to be three days of leadership voting culminating in the announcement of the victor Saturday in Calgary.

"We are one step closer to a government that will stand up and defend our province from the growing attacks against our resources and our economy", Mr. Kenney said earlier to great applause in his victory speech.

Kenney was the central figure in a push to see the Alberta Progressive Conservatives and the Wildrose Party join forces on the right to fight the governing NDP. He won the PC leadership in March, 2017, and in July, Wildrose and PC members voted overwhelmingly to merge.

Nearly 94 per cent of the roughly 63,000 people registered to vote cast a ballot between Thursday and Saturday.

In a statement, the Schweitzer campaign said there are concerns over the handing out of personal identification numbers (PINs) and they wanted the voting system's vendor to implement a new security protocol.

About 62-thousand people are registered to cast ballots in online voting that began Thursday.
