Catalonia's Disputed President Enters Government Buildings

Catalonia's Disputed President Enters Government Buildings”

A press officer for the Catalan government said she couldn't confirm if Puigdemont had been or would be at the office on Monday.

It is also not clear if senior government officials and lawmakers who declared the region's independence from Spain on Friday would try to gain access to their offices and if the Catalan police Mossos d'Esquadra would prevent them.

However, some of the most prominent members of the Catalan administration, including its president Carles Puigdemont and vice-president Oriol Junqueras, said they did not accept the move and only the people of Catalonia could dismiss them.

A few ousted Catalan officials posted pictures on social media of their arrival at work in a show of defiance after being fired by the Spanish government on Friday.

The ambiguous Instagram post, accompanied by the words "Good morning" in Catalan and a smiley emoticon, has left many guessing if Puigdemont is inside the premises.

Spanish authorities say deposed officials will be allowed to take their personal belongings from official buildings, but are barred from performing any official duties.

But support for independence may be declining, a Sigma Dos poll for El Mundo showed Monday.

Zoido is also hosting a meeting in Madrid with the new head of the Catalan police and other officials in the home affairs department of the troubled region. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy then announced the dissolution of the regional Parliament and the removal of Mr Puigdemont as Catalan leader, and ordered that fresh regional elections should be held. He has also dissolved parliament and called an early election for December 21.

Members of Spain's central government, including Dolors Montserrat, the health minister, and Enric Millo, Madrid's representative in Catalonia, attended the rally.

All eyes will be on whether the transfer of power will be smooth or face opposition, which could deepen a month-long political crisis.

Questions were mounting over the weekend on whether Madrid will face meaningful opposition to its imposition of direct rule. Spain's top prosecutor plans to start the process on Monday to charge Puigdemont for offences that will probably include rebellion.

Hundreds of thousands of Catalans took to the streets of Barcelona on Sunday calling for the region to remain part of Spain, two days after the regional parliament's controversial vote in favour of independence.
