England win Fast5 netball; Aussies third”

However, the world number three side were fourth at last year's tournament and have regularly had to settle for a backseat role behind Australia and New Zealand in worldwide netball.

England jumped out to an early lead thanks to two super shots from Jo Harten but eight made shots from Jamaican shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid reduced the margin to two points at halftime.

After a faultless day one where the Roses won all three of their group games, they returned on Sunday to brilliantly beat Australia and secure their place in the final four.

But Jamaica could not build a lead with their power play third quarter and England survived a tense final term to complete an unbeaten run through the tournament.

They closed out their campaign with a 28-17 win over lower-ranked Malawi to end fifth at the six-team showpiece, which was played over two days in the shortened fast5 format.

After dropping two games on the opening day of the Melbourne tournament, the Ferns came into today needing to win both their matches and rely other results to go their way if they were to get a chance to defend the title they have held for the past four years.

The gold medal match will be played out between England and Jamaica.

"We doubled up the second and didn't split too much".

"I am really happy that we improved our performance from previous year; a bit disappointed though that we missed out on the gold medal, having earlier defeated England, but it is all a part of the game".

Serena Guthrie was England's star performer and claimed the Player of the Tournament honours but Rachel Dunn's return to the worldwide arena was worthy of special praise in what was an all-round team effort.

England defeated Jamaica 29-24 in an entertaining final to win for the first time since the event moved to the five-player format in 2012.

In the playoff for third place, Australia crushed New Zealand 34-15.

The FAST5 Ferns took their time to adapt to the fast-paced, colourful version of the game played between the world's top six teams and which incorporates six-minute quarters, rolling substitutions, super shots and power players.

Helen Housby was the most accurate shooter of the match with nine from 11 for England.
