Football Manager adds gay players for FM 2018

Football Manager adds gay players for FM 2018”

The latest incarnation of the Football Manager franchise will include gay footballers in a concerted attempt to help "normalise" the process of professional footballers coming out publicly.

Football Manager 18 have only revealed certain new additions to the game and are concealing others to allow players to discover the new features.

Austrian global Thomas Hitzlspergler became the first English Premier League player to come out as gay less than a year after his retirement in 2013.

Openly gay football players have been introduced to a video game for the first time. Former Premier League footballer Thomas Hitzlsperger came out after he retired in 2014 and LA Galaxy's Robbie Rogers recently returned to football after leaving the sport in order to come out.

Footballers who have come out as gay in real life, such as LA Galaxy forward Robbie Rogers, are not now included in the beta version of the game.

The game's director, Miles Jacobson, said they took the decision because there are gay footballers, despite there being no openly gay players at the top level of British football.

'We didn't really have a way to do things until we were able to hear the stories directly from people in the sport who have come out'. Jacobson said the developer was "able to do things with these players that we can't with real players, because they can't sue us".

'I just think it's insane that in 2017 we are in a world where people can't be themselves'.

"The future" is very much the operative term because homosexuality is a taboo word in football - at least in the mens professional game. You'll receive a message informing you that one of your players has chose to come out, followed by a small boost in revenue meant to simulate increased interest from the LGBT community.

"It will be: Right, OK, let's move on".

'We want to be showing the positive sides of this rather than the negative sides, ' he said. Likewise, it won't apply to players who are from countries where being homosexual is illegal.

He continued: "Being gay is just a totally normal thing in life, and it's the right thing to put it in the game because it's something that we're going to be seeing in the future".

"Hopefully, it will make some people look up and think, 'This is ridiculous'".
