Goldman's Blankfein takes to Twitter to air his Brexit woes (again)

Goldman's Blankfein takes to Twitter to air his Brexit woes (again)”

Tweeting an aerial photo taken of Goldman's new London headquarters still under construction, Blankfein said he hoped the bank could keep and create more jobs in the City.

It had already begun work on a new European headquarters in London before the referendum in June 2016 and the 10-storey building is scheduled for completion in March 2019 - just as the United Kingdom is due to leave the EU. Goldman Sachs' European headquarters is now based on Fleet Street, around the corner from the almost completed new office.

However, it is understood that Goldman has kept the option of letting out remaining space to other tenants, depending on how much square footage it needs for its local workforce.

But Mr Blankfein has raised the prospect it may not be fully occupied because of Brexit.

On October 19, Blankfein sent a similarly pithy message: "Just left Frankfurt". Good, because I'll be spending a lot more time there.

It is the first tweet Blankfein has sent since the one a fortnight ago, when he was in Frankfurt and said he expected to spend more time in the city after Brexit.

Earlier this month it was reported that the group has signed a contract to lease eight floors of a skyscraper in the city, capable of holding 800 staff. Germany's financial capital has emerged as the biggest victor in the fight for the thousands of London-based jobs that will be relocated inside the EU.

Goldman Sachs Chairman and CEO Lloyd Blankfein speaks at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum in NY, U.S., September 20, 2017.

Mizuho will join a raft of Japanese banks which have chosen the city as an European Union hub, including Daiwa, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG) and Nomura.
