Heathrow Airport has launched an internal investigation after a memory stick containing top-secret security information concerning the Queen was found in the street. The data wasn't encrypted.

Other files, all unencrypted, describe the ultrasound detection system for protecting the perimeter fence and the runways, and detail the ID requirements for accessing every area of the airport.

It had names of people exempt from screening, plus details of drivers of VIPs and radio codes in the event of a hijacking.

One document highlighted recent terror attacks and talked about the type of threat the airport could face, the newspaper report said.

When asked about the allegations, a Heathrow spokesperson told CNN that "Heathrow's top priority is the safety and security of our passengers and colleagues".

The airport says security officials "launched an internal investigation to understand how this happened and are taking steps to prevent a similar occurrence in future". The USB drive also includes maps showing where CCTV cameras are located, and escape route for the Heathrow Express railway serving the airport.

Heathrow, Britain's biggest airport which handled almost 76 million passengers past year, is considered a prime target for terrorists.

A Heathrow spokesperson told Sky News: 'We have reviewed all of our security plans and are confident that Heathrow remains secure.

Security at the airport is handled by the aviation security unit of London's Metropolitan Police, although the army has been deployed at the during periods of heightened security.
