IPhone 8 helped Apple sell 40% more smartphones in China last quarter

The response to the new iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus has been positive, and the Chinese audience is hyped for the iPhone X.

Apple's smartphone shipments to China are tipped to rebound in the third quarter, according to research firm Canalys, but the result is still unlikely to make a lot of change to its overall market share of the world's largest market. As of now, most people are not much interested in iPhone 8, which looks more like an updated version of iPhone 7, they are planning to purchase iPhone X because of its three major highlights i.e. Face ID, bezel-less display and super retina screen. In the US, reports have indicated that the iPhone 7 remains more popular with shoppers so far.

The big gainer is Apple, which saw its numbers grow 40%. The trend seen by Kantar is now confirmed in a new research report today and that's great news as Apple reports their fiscal Q4 financials on Thursday.

"The high price of iPhone X in China means it is not the device for everyone, and Apple still needs to overcome its production capacity challenges, which is expected to weigh on sales in the near future", said Jia, adding shipment dates to the mainland are already standing at five-to-six weeks from order date.

"The growth in the September quarter is only temporary". The high sell-in caters to the pent-up demand of iPhone upgraders in the absence of the iPhone X. Price cuts on earlier models after announcing the iPhone 8 have also helped.

Just as problematic is that the overall Chinese handset market is weakening.

The three top brands are Huawei (19 percent), Oppo (18 percent), and Vivo (17 percent.) market share respectively. 12 months later the company registered 11 million units. Oppo shipped 21 million, and Vivo sold 20 million.
