Published a new sanctions list of the United States of America against Russian companies

The U.S. State Department on Thursday said it had belatedly begun informing Congress and others about groups associated with the Russian intelligence and defense sectors as required under a 2017 law tightening sanctions on Russia.

That list was made public on Friday, according to State Department officials, who noted that the US would work with allies and partners in the coming months to identify transactions that may be problematic once the sanctions take effect.

"Secretary Tillerson has signed off on this and it is now being held on Capitol Hill", she said.

The US State Department said Friday that the newly proposed US sanctions against Russian Federation were not thought of in Washington as a tool for competing with Moscow on the global weapons market, APA reports quoting sputniknews.

The law calls on the president to impose sanctions on anyone he identifies as having engaged "in a significant transaction with a person that is part of, or operates for or on behalf of, the defense or intelligence sectors" of the Russian government.

US lawmakers including Senator John McCain have criticized the Trump administration for missing a previous deadline for imposing penalties on Moscow.

When the department missed the deadline, lawmakers cried foul and accused the administration of dragging its feet because of Trump's opposition to elements of the sanctions law.

According to the representative of the state Department, Washington got in touch with allies and partners in Europe and beyond.

Senator Bob Corker, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and in recent weeks a sharp critic of Trump's character, welcomed the delivery. "Congress will expect thorough and timely consultation until full implementation is complete".

Saudi Arabia, another US ally, also recently struck an array of deals with Moscow, including contracts to buy Russian weapons.

The United States has already imposed a range of sanctions on Russian Federation in response to human rights violations and its actions in Ukraine, but the new law goes further.

On Thursday, the New York Times published a list of entities that the US State Department has suggested should be sanctioned.
