Subaru says improper inspections conducted for Japan cars”

Kyodo News reported separately that Subaru had been letting uncertified technicians oversee final inspections for over 30 years, without citing its source.

Subaru President Yasuyuki Yoshinaga admitted Friday at a press conference that the malpractice was conducted in a systematic manner.

The revelation follows a similar issue at Nissan Motor nsany and comes as Japanese manufacturers grapple with wider compliance problems with Kobe Steel kbsty saying on Thursday it had found more possible cases of data fabrication on its products.

On Monday, Subaru reported the results of its internal investigation on the issue to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

"We are truly sorry, and we apologize", Yoshinaga said, after bowing deeply.

The scandals have stunned the public and cast a shadow over this nation's prized image for "monozukuri" or craftsman-like production, reputed for high quality and meticulousness.

Subaru had uncertified staff conducting vehicle inspections.

Yoshinaga said a thorough review of the entire inspection system was needed throughout the company's operations.

Workers who didn't have enough experience to do checks borrowed Japanese "hanko" seals from authorized employees and stamped documents to show vehicles had passed the tests, according to the company.

The automaker said it was therefore considering recalling about 255,000 vehicles including its Legacy, Forester and Impreza models produced at the complex and sold at home, at a cost of around 5 billion yen ($43.86 million).

Subaru, formerly called Fuji Heavy Industries, is partnered with Toyota Motor Corp., a top shareholder. The minivehicles supplied by Daihatsu Motor Co will not be subject to recall.

Japanese carmakers are now conducting internal probes, with six of them - Toyota, Honda Motor Co, Mazda Motor Corp, Mitsubishi Motors Corp, Suzuki Motor Corp and Daihatsu - already having reported to the transport ministry that no problems were found in their inspection systems.
