Thor: Ragnarok Crosses $100 Million Mark at Overseas Box Office”

In Marvel Studios' "Thor: Ragnarok", Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok-the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization-at the hands of an all-powerful threat, the ruthless Hela.

Now the best opening weekend of 2017 at the North American box office is held by Beauty and the Beast with a US$174.8 million haul, which also holds the year's highest total gross of US$1.26 billion internationally.

Ragnarok has already opened in roughly half of its foreign markets and THR reports this weekend has taken in $107.6 million.

The UK was the top market with US$15.8m, 27 per cent ahead of Marvel's Doctor Strange.

Ragnarok's overseas opening weekend puts it just ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which earned $106 million earlier this summer.

This global launch is at the top-end of Ragnarok's early projections; it was previously estimated that Waititi's film would open somewhere between $85-$100M internationally.

On top of that, of all the countries the film has opened in to date, New Zealand has delivered the biggest local opening weekend in 2017. The film has obviously been helped by a lack of competition, and with no tentpoles in the next couple of weeks, Ragnarok should continue to perform well. The movie is set to hit the lucrative China and Japan markets, along with its debut in Germany, Russia, and Mexico.

Thor: Ragnarok premiered locally on Tuesday, and was in cinemas the next day, which would have boosted the "opening weekend" figures with revenue from screenings across the week.
