Tony Podesta Departs From Lobbying Firm Amid Mueller Probe”

Tony Podesta dances at a gala in D.C. on April 21.

Podesta made the announcement at a meeting with the entire Podesta Group lobbying firm on Monday morning, according to Politico. Podesta's company was one of the firms hired by Manafort to do work on the campaign that looked to promote the Ukraine in the United States. Manafort turned himself in to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Monday, after being indicted on 12 counts, among which were "conspiracy to launder money, unregistered agent of a foreign principal, false and misleading FARA statements, and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts".

Podesta's appearance is uncomfortable for Clinton because he and his brother, Clinton campaign chief John Podesta, are now a focus of Mueller's corruption investigation with their political consultancy business, the Podesta Group.

Later in the day, Podesta announced his resignation at a staff meeting at the Podesta Group's Washington headquarters. Manafort, the former campaign manager for President Donald Trump, was indicted on 12 counts Monday.

Both Manafort and the Podesta Group failed to register as lobbyists acting on behalf of a foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). Their real client was the government of Ukraine, the indictment says. Manafort worked for the Party of Regions, a pro-Russia Ukrainian political party whose president, Viktor Yanukovych, ruled Ukraine between 2010 and 2014.

Mueller, the special counsel overseeing the investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, initially began looking into the Podesta Group as a way to find information on Manafort's involvement with the ECMU; however, he soon began to investigate whether the group violated the Foreign Agents' Registration Act, which requires anyone doing political work on behalf of a foreign element in the U.S. to disclose that relationship to the USA government. "The Podesta Group has fully cooperated with the special counsel's office and taken every possible step to provide documentation that confirms compliance with the law". Based on our due diligence and on the recommendation of definitive legal experts, the firm filed the appropriate public disclosures of its representation of the ECFMU over five years ago, and in eight subsequent public filings.
