Remain leaders hold private talks with Michel Barnier in Brussels

Remain leaders hold private talks with Michel Barnier in Brussels”

The European Union's chief Brexit negotiator yesterday held private talks with a cross-party group of United Kingdom politicians at the forefront of the campaign to keep Britain in the EU.

Nigel Farage has written to the EU's chief negotiator requesting a one-to-one meeting to discuss the Brexit negotiations.

Asked whether he had travelled to the European Commission's offices in the Belgian capital to stop Brexit, former MP Mr Clegg told the BBC: "If only it were that easy!"

As they arrived, Mr Clarke joked that "we are here to talk about cricket" and did not respond to questions about whether he had permission from the government to attend the meeting.

A cross-party group of Nick Clegg, Ken Clarke, and Andrew Adonis met with Michel Barnier and European Union commissioner Pierre Moscovici in the European Union capital, where The Independent understands, they discussed "future scenarios" and "the direction of talks".

Meanwhile Mr Davis is planning meetings in London and across Europe with senior officials from a variety of EU27 countries in an attempt to bring them on side.

"As you will know from having studied the published agenda of Michel Barnier over these last couple of months, you will have seen that his door is always open for people who want to speak to him and his team across the political spectrum and from all walks of life, from all parties, whoever is interested to speak to Michel Barnier".

"That obviously does include 'no deal", but as the Prime Minister has said on many occasions, we are working towards getting a deal and we are confident that we will do so'.

"In terms of the specifics of what Michel Barnier and David Davis's teams will do next, those conversations will take place".

The European Commission said timing of the next round of talks was "under discussion".

Former leader of the U.K. Independence Party (UKIP) Nigel Farage said he has "had enough" with the state of Brexit talks and wants to get involved himself. Especially so, as Clegg has no electoral mandate. Michel Barnier is the EU's chief negotiator and is responsible for talks with David Davis.
