Zach Levi Cast as Shazam! Title Role in Upcoming DC Film

DC has locked in a new leading man.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levi had beat out other actors who were lined up for the role like Jake McDorman (Limitless) and fan choice John Cena. Each letter in the DC hero's name stands for a different god/historical figure-those being: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury-whose attributes are bestowed upon Bastion when he transforms.

As of now, Shazam! is still in its early stages of pre-production, and the movie is set to come out April 5, 2019.

Levi posted his statement about the news on Instagram, saying, "Honored and greatly humbled to be a part of the #dcuniverse by bringing the original Captain Marvel to life". Other actors that were also being considered were Billy Magnussen (Into the Woods), Derek Theler (Baby Daddy), and Zane Holtz (Perks of Being a Wallflower).

Last year, Shazam! was divided into two films, with Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam getting his own standalone DC film that's being developed alongside Shazam. Although, evidently not for long. So we were basically back to square one with the Shazam! movie.

Shazam! will be the next DCEU film to begin shooting, putting the film ahead of the likes of Flashpoint, Batgirl, and the Suicide Squad sequel. All signs, though, seem to be pointing to a 2019 release for Shazam.
