46 million handphone numbers leaked in 2014, says Lowyat.net”

Separately, a ministry source revealed that the attack on virtually all local telcos and mobile virtual network operators as well as the databases of the Malaysian Medical Council, the Malaysian Medical Association and the Malaysian Dental Association may have been launched from overseas.

Lowyat.net said it had handed over its information to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), which is working with police to investigate. Many Malaysians have several mobile numbers.

"These medical databases included personal information, MyKad numbers, mobile/work/home phone numbers, as well as work and residential addresses". Both MCMC and the department could not be reached.

Malaysian citizens have been affected by a massive data breach including more than 46 million mobile phone numbers as well as more than 80,000 medical records, according to local reports.

Number of records from the Malaysian Medical Council, the Malaysian Medical Association and the Malaysian Dental Association that were exposed.

Lowyat.net, a Malaysian news site that also operates online forums, said earlier this month it had found an individual attempting to use one of its forums to sell the data.

The leaked data was being sold for an undisclosed amount of Bitcoin, a digital currency, Lowyat.net said on Monday.

"This is to ensure that they understand what is happening now, especially when the police, through the Commercial Crime Investigation Department, visit them to investigate", he said after the Star Rating Award 2016 for Public Cellular Service Provider's ceremony in Cyberjaya today.

MCMC chief operating officer Mazlan Ismail said the meeting was held to seek cooperation from all the companies, and so that they could be kept up to speed on the issue.

Cyber security analysts said the hackers could make Malaysia vulnerable to phone scam attacks.

Other users could be tricked into transferring their money or installing "telco applications" containing malware or spyware. "Do not get tricked into sharing more personal details, transferring funds or installing apps".

Technology strategist Dinesh Nair said there was not much consumers could do, but they should change their SIM cards, for a start.

"I'm sure my data is there as well".
