Arsene Wenger backs rejuvenated Mathieu Debuchy as Arsenal centre-back

Arsene Wenger backs rejuvenated Mathieu Debuchy as Arsenal centre-back”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Mathieu Debuchy is back in his plans, as reported by the Evening Standard.

That match will have the Gunners on one day's less rest than Man City and be played at the Etihad Stadium, though the PL leaders are in Napoli for their midweek match while Arsenal is at home to Red Star Belgrade.

Debuchy will hope to play again the Europa League when Red Star Belgrade visit the Emirates on Thursday, though Callum Chambers is in line to feature having overcome a hip injury.

Arsenal have been in good form in Europe this season but have struggled to produce consistent performances in the Premier League, with Arsene Wenger's men now fifth in the table and nine points behind leaders Manchester City.

The boss added: "We are all very pleased for him here because he has gone through some very hard moments with setbacks". He needs to recover now but from now on, he'll be a candidate to fight for the team places again.

With Arsenal continuing to persist with their three at the back formation, it perhaps gives Debuchy more of an opportunity to regain his place in the team.

Although Debuchy has played nearly the entirety of his professional career as a right back, he has flourished as a centre back in Arsenal's 3-4-2-1 formation.

Commenting on the situation, Wenger stated: "Maybe his future is as a centre-back". He has the attributes because he's very good in the air.

"It's a big game, a challenging one because they are on a strong run", Wenger conceded. As a true Arsenal fan, an ex-player of the club for that matter, I want them to make waves, to achieve something.
