Saudi Arabia to allow women attend sporting events inside stadiums”

Saudi Arabia plans to start issuing tourist visas "soon", authorities said Tuesday, as the ultra-conservative kingdom seeks to attract worldwide visitors in a radical overhaul of its oil-dependent economy.

The Ukrainian president met earlier with Abdullatif bin Rashid al-Zayani, secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council (of which Saudi Arabia is a leading member), urging the six-nation council to play a more active role in protecting the rights of Crimean Tatars.

"With the King, His Majesty, we agreed that we will decisively reduce visa fees, and will create more opportunities for businessmen, entrepreneurs, tourists, so that the Saudis open a fantastic Ukraine, and Ukrainians have the opportunity to travel to Saudi Arabia", the Ukrainian president added.

Saudi Arabia is going to allow women to witness the sports competitions in the stadium for the first time.

The development is being seen as a part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's ambitious reforms to modernise Saudi society and boost the economy.

Saudi Arabia, which was the only country in the world to forbid female drivers, recently also allowed women to drive in the country.

The moves appear created to project the kingdom in a favourable light as it seeks to attract badly needed foreign investment.
