Senate Republicans in no rush to shield Mueller from Trump”

Democrats demanded Monday that Congress approve a bill preventing the special counsel from being fired after Robert Mueller unsealed charges against three former Trump campaign officials concerning their work with or on behalf of Russian interests.

McConnell's remarks came as Trump has continued using Twitter to complain about the continued focus on "phony Trump/Russia" connections, instead of on Hillary Clinton and Democrats. When they did, GOP Senator Chuck Grassley-who chairs the Judiciary Committee, which is probing Russian interference-turned and walked out the door behind him, almost knocking over the American flags nearby in the process.

Harris was alluding to two bipartisan bills in Congress that would protect Mueller from termination. After an initial flurry of support, the bills have stalled as Trump has softened his public criticism of Mueller.

"This was a meticulously documented indictment and certainly in the case of one of the individuals, I think it opens the door to other matters and it emphasizes why the rule of law is so important and that even includes the president", said Sen.

Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) suggested to TMN Monday that she was not surprised by news of the indictment.

I can appreciate why some lawmakers are prepared to take a we'll-cross-that-bridge-later posture, hoping they can put off action on this issue.

Monday, following news that the Mueller probe had led to the indictment of former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and associate Rick Gates, a spokesman for Johnson said his position had not changed. "He needs to continue to investigate", said Sen.

Legislation sponsored by Sen. Legislation co-sponsored by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), a cosponsor of the Special Counsel Independence Protection Act. In the Senate, GOP leaders are also aiming to confirm a slate of judicial nominees - a top priority for many conservative activists. Susan Collins, R-Maine. "I think that's extremely unlikely".

"I don't want to deny the Justice Department or special counsel resources they need", said Senate Judiciary Committee member John Kennedy, R-La., just moments after telling reporters he believed the uranium probes deserved more attention. Blunt said he wasn't concerned that Trump might take on Mueller more aggressively but added, "I'm also not for it".

Corker said there was no talk about the Mueller investigation at Tuesday's weekly GOP policy luncheon.

"Everybody that I know does not think that's a good idea", Sen.

But some senators say they aren't anxious about Trump firing Mueller - yet. "I don't know what the actual reaction would be if it happened". "Now I don't want to see them just go hog wild and waste money either". Most Republican lawmakers said they don't believe that Trump will fire Mueller or defund or otherwise upend his investigation. Pentagon begins pulling back ships from Puerto Rico Michael Steele: Trump's feud between Flake and others is personal, not political MORE (R-Ariz.), who like Flake has been a vocal critic of the president, said that he would "oppose [that] and so would the American people".

"I guarantee you more shoes will drop", said McCain. "And pardons are not on the table".

But any push to defund Mueller appears unlikely to gain traction in Congress, where Mueller, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, is widely respected.
