Amazon just bought three domain names related to cryptocurrency

Following Bitcoin's record-breaking surge to $6,900 after CME announced a plan to launch Bitcoin futures, tech giant Amazon has purchased cryptocurrency-related web domains, giving rise to speculation about a possible entry into the cryptocurrency arena.

There have been some rumours of Amazon eventually accepting cryptocurrencies, like bitcoin, but the company has never acknowledged these plans.

And the latest moves suggest that it is at least on the radar at Amazon because they've been on a shopping spree for domain names.

The three domain names-amazonethereum.com, amazoncryptocurrency.com and amazoncryptocurrencies.com- have been registered in the name of Amazon Technologies, Inc., the subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc.

Alternatively, Amazon could be seeking to avoid confusion between cryptocurrencies and Amazon Coin, a virtual currency product introduced in 2013 that serves as an online payment method for customers.

There have been rumours in the past, including about eBay accepting Bitcoin, but there hasn't been any movement. On Amazon, Lubin said "Amazon, we've not seen that much, so we'll see".

In any case, Amazon seems intent on owning multiple cryptocurrency-related domain names. It makes good sense. According to Coindesk, Amazon signed up for the domain "amazonbitcoin.com" three years ago.
