British police request extradition of Manchester bomber's brother from Libya

British police request extradition of Manchester bomber's brother from Libya”

British police said on Wednesday they had issued an arrest warrant for the brother of a suicide bomber who killed 22 people in an attack on a pop concert in Manchester in May and prosecutors had asked Libya to extradite him.

He is a younger sibling of Salman Abedi, who carried out the attack at the Ariana Grande concert, killing 22 people.

Among those that lost their lives are South Shields couple, 17 year old Chloe Rutherford and her 19 year old boyfriend Liam Curry.

"That is why the Home Secretary agreed to request the extradition of Hashem Abedi, who has been named as a suspect by Greater Manchester Police, and we continue to work closely with the CPS, police and Libyan authorities to return him to the United Kingdom".

Police have also revealed that in addition to the 22 families devastated by the murder of their loved ones, there are more than 500 injured people from the attack.

Manchester police did not provide details on whether the duo had been continuously held since May, or whether they had been released and subsequently detained.

Police previously said they do not think Salman Abedi was part of a wider network but believe others were involved in the planning of the attack and named Hashem as a suspect.

"We are grateful for the Libyan authorities considering this request." said Jackson.

Officers said among those who survived the blast, 16 were seriously injured - with injuries including paralysis, loss of limbs, internal injuries and serious facial injuries.

So far police have have arrested 23 people, searched 30 addresses and seized 11,000 exhibits.

The spokesperson said: "This investigation is still running at a very fast pace".

16 terabytes of data have been being examined, over 1300 statements have been taken and there are over 5,000 people referenced in the inquiry.

Police have also been working through 16,000 hours of CCTV and over 8 million lines of telephone communications data. We are incredibly grateful for the support of the hundreds of people affected by this frightful attack and our officers are constantly moved by their stories and by their accounts.
