Gender gap grows again after a decade

Gender gap grows again after a decade”

The WEF warned that the global gender gap is now widening, following a decade of slow progress toward parity between the sexes.

When it comes to health and survival, which measures the sex ratio at birth and the gap between men and women's healthy life expectancy, the country is ranked at 115.

The factors kept in mind for this are economic participation, access to education, political representation and health and survival.

"Our goal is to work to further close the gender pay gap for women and focus on pay equality". India ranks 139th among 144 countries on this parameter this year.

Although India ranks 15th on the parameter of political empowerment, the report suggests that women need to participate actively in Indian politics to maintain this position.

"New Zealand can and should be a world leader in ending women being paid less". In economic participation and opportunity, it rose to 114th from 118th due to a narrower income gap. The World Economic Forum states that the parity gap across health, education, politics and the workplace on a global scale is widening.

It found, for the first time since its report first appeared in 2006, that the disparity between men and women across all four factors had widened, to an average measure of 32 per cent from 31.7 per cent previous year.

The top three ranks are once again held by Scandinavian countries - Iceland, Norway, and Finland respectively.

The report found that if the current trend continues, it would take 100 years to close the global gender gap, while the gap in political representation would take 99 years. The report also estimates that the workplace gender gap will now not be closed for another 217 years.
