I was raped at a Labour party event, says activist

Labour activist has said she was raped at a party event and discouraged from reporting the attack by a senior Labour official, who said it could "damage" her career.

Ms Bailey said she opened up about the incident in a bid to achieve "actual change" in the handling of sexual assault cases mid an escalating sexual harassment scandal in Westminster.

"But when I did, I told a senior member of staff, who told me... or it was suggested to me that I not report it".

Ed Miliband, who was Labour leader at the time of Ms Bailey's alleged rape in 2011, said he was "shocked" by the "horrific allegations".

She did not report the attack to police at the time, saying she felt "scared and ashamed" adding: "I was anxious that I would not be believed".

"I don't think I was even given a cup of tea at the time".

The 25-year-old is a former member of Labour's ruling National Executive Committee.

Asked about the complaints procedure in the party, she said: "It seemed to be that there wasn't one that existed and I wasn't signposted to anyone else that could help me in terms of a charity or anything like that".

Creasy, a long-standing campaigner on equality issues, wants to see allegations involving Labour Party members or staff investigated by an independent body. Victims must be supported when they come forward.

In other news, child sex abuse in Scotland's care homes has been "drastically" underestimated, a leading social worker told an inquiry, as police were criticised for failures in investigating allegations, according to The Herald.

A well-known Labour Party activist told the BBC she was raped by a senior colleague but was advised not to report it when she confided in a senior member of staff. She is calling for an independent agency "free from political bias" to deal with such allegations.

"The Labour Party is extremely serious about tackling any form of abuse and making sure we have a transparent structure in place", she said - praising Ms Bailey as "a strong and unbelievable young lady".

Adam Mohamed, who previously stood to become the Labour nominee to stand in the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner elections, said: "Whilst I do not want to pre-judge what changes happen, there is a deeply embedded culture within the Party "machine" of patronage and authoritarianism which has massively contributed to the events that Bex describes and will not be easily removed".

Labour have responded by launching an investigation, to be headed by an independent legal expert, into her claims.

Ms Bailey said the attack was not carried out by an MP, but by an individual more senior to her.

"There will be no tolerance in the Labour Party for sexism, harassment or abuse".

"I will be operating a zero-tolerance approach towards anyone I see being disrespectful towards anyone who is courageous enough to come forward - and I'm sure there will be many more".

Meanwhile, the BBC has seen a list, thought to have been compiled by staff and researchers at Westminster, detailing a range of mostly unproven allegations about 40 Conservative MPs and ministers.
