JFK files show informant told CIA Hitler was living in Colombia”

An informant told agents that the Nazi leader was alive and living in the South American country under a new identity.

The CIA investigated reports that Adolf Hitler survived the Second World War and fled to Colombia, a recently declassified document has revealed.

According to the Miami Herald, a document dated October 3, 1955 revealed that an unidentified Central Intelligence Agency agent, referred to as CIMELODY-3 was contacted by a "trusted friend who served under his command in Europe and who is presently residing in Maracaibo (Venezuela)".

Citroen claimed that Hitler, who would have been 66, had worked for months as a shipping company employee in Colombia before leaving for Argentina.

Hitler killed himself with a gunshot to the head and cyanide capsules in his bunker during the Soviet liberation of Berlin on April 30, 1945.

It added Citroen's belief that the Allies would be unable to prosecute Hitler for war crimes because ten years had passed since the end of the war.

According to the memo, former German SS agent Phillip Citroen had confided to the informant that while working in Tunja he had met a man strongly resembling and claiming to be the Nazi dictator, and that he remained in touch with this person.

A Russian official claimed in an interview with CNN in 2009 that the Russian army threw Hitler's remains into a German river. The back side of the photograph contained the following data: "'Adolf Schrittelmayor, Tunga, Colombia, 1954, '" the document reads.

"Citroen also stated Hitler left Colombia for Argentina around January 1955", the memo notes.

More information was given by another document dated October 17, 1955, which cited "an undated memorandum, believed to have been written about mid-February 1954".

The document also says that Citroen claimed that many former Nazis were living in the "Residencias Coloniales" neighborhood. According to Citroen, the man was going by the name "Adolf Schritteimayor", though fellow Nazis in the town still addressed him as "der fuhrer".

"It is felt that enormous efforts (spent trying to confirm the rumors) could be expanded on this matter with remote possibilities of establishing anything concrete", a letter dated November 4, 1955, reads.
