Malkin's goal in 3rd lifts Penguins past Oilers, 3-2”

True the Oilers, with the 30th-ranked penalty kill, did stop a five-on-three for 102 seconds in the middle period and did score on their 29th-rated power play but the Penguins, with the NHL's fourth-best PP, scored twice with the man advantage including Evgeni Malkin's victor with seven and half minutes left in the third.

Pittsburgh Penguins' Evgeni Malkin (71) and Patric Hornqvist (72) celebrate a goal as Edmonton Oilers' Darnell Nurse (25) skates past during the third period of an NHL hockey game in Edmonton, Alberta, Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017. The Oilers fall to 3-7-1 on the season.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl replied for the Oilers (3-7-1), who continue to struggle with four losses in their last five games. The Penguins forward has now scored a goal in three consecutive games. The Oilers had several chances a few minutes later on a power play but couldn't get one past Matt Murray. In the third, Malkin scored a power play goal at the 12:23 mark and the Penguins never looked back. The Penguins found themselves down 2-1 in the second period when Conor Sheary tied the game with under 30 seconds remaining in the frame.

Edmonton pressured in the final minute but Murray made great saves on Maroon and Nugent-Hopkins.

Sidney Crosby followed McDavid's play with a similar pass on a 2-on-1 to set up a goal by Sheary with 22 seconds left in the second. The puck bounced to McDavid at the left face-off circle and he stepped around defenseman Olli Maatta before making a backhand pass to Draisaitl.

The Oilers will host New Jersey on Friday night.
