Remains found on BC farm are those of missing teen: RCMP”

Human remains found on the rural B.C. farm that has been the subject of an intense police investigation for almost two weeks have been confirmed to be those of Traci Genereaux, a teenager who disappeared from Vernon this spring.

"She came to me in the morning and asked for a smoke and I said, 'okay but you look bad today so you have to go to my room or go do something and can't sit in the lobby.' She's like, 'I got plans, ' and she went out".

"They got hold of us and said they needed DNA to send to the coroner to check against the remains found at Silver Creek to see if my baby girl has been found or not", he said, his voice cracking.

Genereaux questioned why his DNA was not taken six months ago when his daughter disappeared if it's common practice. On Oct. 21, they announced human remains had been found.

"Now that the identification has been confirmed, the RCMP are once again seeking the public's assistance in any information that can help advance the investigation into the disappearance and death of Traci Genereaux", said Cpl Dan Moskaluk.

A forensics team specializing in recovering evidence was brought in to help last week and Mounties said the underwater recovery team had been conducting searches of the Salmon River, which runs through the property.

A title search shows the property is owned by Wayne and Evelyn Sagmoen.

The farm is associated with Curtis Wayne Sagmoen, who has been charged with six offences stemming from an August 27 incident near Falkland.

The charges came after police issued a warning to "the general public and women sex workers" about a possible risk around Salmon River Road after a incident on August 28 when a woman was allegedly threatened with a firearm.

Mr. Sagmoen appeared briefly before a judge via teleconference at the Vernon Law Courts last Thursday and was remanded into custody until his next appearance on November 23.

Genereaux is one of five women reported missing in the region around the rural property between Vernon and Salmon Arm over the past two years.

Police said she was last seen around the 24 Avenue area of Vernon, known as the "Red Light District", talking to someone in a white van.

"She was staying with me at the motel [where I worked]", Nixon told Global News Monday evening.

"We were going to sit outside and watch the stars that night", he said. He began to worry a couple days later when he phoned her mother and learned she wasn't there.

Genereaux said his daughter had made some poor decisions in the past but she was getting her life on track.

"I don't want Traci to be involved in that", she said.

Her 19th birthday was on October 4. Moskaluk said is being treated as suspicious.

He said his daughter is artistic, amusing and loud.

Last December, the teenager broke her back in a vehicle accident and went to her parents, telling them it was time to change her life.

"The last few years she's been doing the street life", Nixon said.
