Reporter Violently Arrested While Filming Ed Gillespie's Campaign Vehicle”

After Stark is placed in handcuffs, he is seen being turned over onto his side and told that he was arrested for using profanity, which one of the officers said was in violation of county code 511. But when Stark has asked Gillespie to address it, Gillespie has ducked the question time and again.

Stark has been following Ed Gillespie around the commonwealth during his rather stealthy campaign as the Republican candidate for Virginia governor.

An officer pushed the unresisting reporter against a wrought iron fence and then, without any reason, grabbed hold of his ankle and threw him to the ground.

"Wait, wait", said a flustered Stark as the officers nearly jump on top of him, but suddenly one of the cops grabbed hold of his ankle and threw him down face-first on the pavement.

The officers claimed in the video that Stark was being arrested for public swearing, but his record showed he was taken in for disorderly conduct - aside from the cursing, there was no sign of that - and resisting arrest, which everyone knows is a cop's favorite catch-22.

"I'm standing before you to defend the lawful actions of my police officers enforcing the law and protecting the community at a parade", Roessler said, later adding that the officers will remain on active duty during the internal probe.

It's not apparent from the footage whether Stark was actually avoiding arrest. Video of the arrest was posted online Tuesday by Shareblue Media, the liberal news website for which Stark reports.

"We're aware of it, but we're not ready to say anything about it", said Officer Kent Bailey, a Fairfax County police spokesman.

The arrest provoked outrage and disgust among journalists and civil liberties defenders.

"An attack on the press is an attack on our constitutional democracy", the ACLU tweeted in response to the video. "We can't let this be accepted as normal".

Stark said he told the officer that he was a reporter and that he would be covering Gillespie, who is squaring off against Democratic nominee Ralph Northam in a race that has gained national attention.

Police slammed a reporter to the ground before a campaign event for Virginia GOP gubernational candidate Ed Gillespie.

The Fairfax County Police Department said in a statement that Stark had been arrested due to "his refusal to comply with police orders" after police "asked him to move out of the street and to stop using obscene language due to other parade spectators around him". "That's part of our investigation". Shareblue confirmed Stark was released on a $3,000 bond. He has also told reporters he shares videos with American Bridge, a Democratic political action committee.
