SAS soldiers to be tried over deaths on training march

SAS soldiers to be tried over deaths on training march”

Two soldiers have been charged with negligence in connection to the deaths of three recruits during an SAS training exercise in the Brecon Beacons. L/Cpl Craig Roberts, 24, Trooper Edward Maher, 31, and Cpl James Dunsby, 31, all died after collapsing during the march on the Brecon Beacons in South Wales on one of the hottest days of 2013.

The SPA confirmed "charges had been directed". They face a maximum sentence of two years if convicted in a military court.

At the inquest into their deaths in 2015, coroner Louise Hunt said parts of the planning and conduct of the 16-mile SAS test march on 13 July, 2013, were inadequate or not fit for objective.

A coroner ruled neglect had contributed to their deaths.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said: "Any decision to prosecute any personnel, veteran or serving, is made by the Service Prosecuting Authority, an independent body".

It is understood the two men who have been charged were responsible for the soldiers' training - one was a training officer and the other a chief instructor.

Cpl Dunsby's dad David has said he does not want the soldiers charged, adding: "These two men have people above them".

The SPA initially decided not to charge anyone over the deaths but the charges were directed after lawyers acting for some of the bereaved lodged a review.
