World's most expensive dram of whisky exposed as fake

World's most expensive dram of whisky exposed as fake”

Following an investigation that involved a series of forensic tests by Rare Whisky 101 (RW101), the whisky was deemed to be "worthless" as a collector's item since it dates back to no earlier than 1970.

But following a series of investigative and forensic tests carried out by Scottish whisky valuation service Rare Whisky 101, in conjunction with the hotel, the Waldhaus Am See in St Moritz, the whisky has been shown to date back no further than 1970, deeming it nearly worthless as a collector's item.

In August, the young customer entered the Devil's Place Whisky Bar at the luxury Waldhaus Hotel in St. Moritz, northeast Switzerland, and expressed particular interest in rare Macallans.

When Chinese millionaire, Zhang Wei, splashed out £7,600 on the world's most expensive whisky shot in a Swiss bar, he boasted to his fans that it was the same age as his great, great grandmother would have been - 139 years old.

"Indeed, we've noticed an increasing number of old, rare archive or antique bottles coming to market at auction, and it's hard to know how prevalent this problem is".

A carbon dating test now says it is a blended whisky from the 1970s.

One of the world's most expensive bottles of whisky has been exposed as a fake after laboratory tests revealed it was nearly a century younger than stated.

However, Zhang was not left out of pocket as Bernasconi personally flew to China to refund him, after the hotel found out the whisky in the bottle was in fact a fake.

'Indeed, we've noticed an increasing number of old, rare archive or antique bottles coming to market at auction, and it's hard to know how prevalent this problem is.

RW101 is "working closely" with The Macallan owner, Edrington on its initiatives to tackle fake whisky.

"When it comes to selling our customers some of the world's rarest and oldest whiskies, we felt it was our duty to ensure that our stock is 100% authentic and the real deal". Had the bottle been genuine, it would have been worth £227,000.

"Over the past year, we have been invited by numerous bottle owners and auction houses to assess suspicious bottles", said David Robertson, RW101 co-founder.

The research laboratory concluded there was a 95% probability that the liquid was created between 1970 and 1972. "The result has been a big shock to the system".

As reported on Scotchwhisky.com at the time, a number of whisky experts and enthusiasts pointed out that the bottle is very likely from a run of infamous knock-offs that were produced in Italy some years ago as the Scotch mania began to gather momentum.

More tests by Tatlock and Thomson lab showed the whisky was probably a blend of 60% malt and 40% grain; in other words, not a single malt Scotch whisky as claimed.
