Emirates receives 100th Airbus A380 in Hamburg with Sheikh Zayed livery

Emirates receives 100th Airbus A380 in Hamburg with Sheikh Zayed livery”

Airbus and Emirates hope to reach a deal by the time of the Dubai Air Show, which opens November 12, representatives of the two sides say in Hamburg, where Emirates took delivery of its 100th A380.

"We are extremely proud of our long-standing relationship with Emirates - a partnership that has been integral to the A380 programme", said Mr Enders.

"I hope that we will be able to do it" in time for the air show, Al Maktoum said to reporters, according to Bloomberg.

The Airbus A380 - the company's largest and most expensive plane - has become a tough sell, with Emirates the only major customer for the double-decker plane as carriers pick smaller aircraft.

Emirates is by far the world's biggest customer of the A380.

Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines, Emirates' 100th A380 is configured in a three-class layout, with 14 private suites in first class, 76 seats in business and 426 in economy, and is fitted with what Airbus describes as "the airline's newly revamped onboard lounge". Overall, Airbus has received more than 315 orders for the jet, though the future of numerous remaining unfilled orders are uncertain as buyers rethink their plans or have run into financial difficulties. Boeing is considering adding a 777-10 to its new 777X family to seat up to 450 passengers, compared to the 500 or so in a typical configuration of the A380, which can accommodate a maximum of 850 seats in a single-class configuration. "We remain committed to the program and will work closely with Airbus and our partners to continually enhance our A380 product".

Most other customers, such as British Airways to Lufthansa to Air France, have made the plane only a sub-category of their fleets. The Dubai carrier has the most A380 aircraft in the world and has another 42 on order.

The event in Hamburg was also attended by HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Emirates' Chairman and Chief Executive, who also officiated the ceremony.

Leahy, who has racked up more than 15,500 jet orders worth $1.7 trillion at list prices over two decades as head salesman, could make a final Emirates deal his swan song.

"I'm not sure I will let John Leahy retire without at least one more significant A380 order", Enders said, in reference to the departing sales chief of Airbus.
