Five firms chase £2.7bn HS2 deal

Five firms chase £2.7bn HS2 deal”

High Speed Two, the government agency charged with delivering the £55 billion London-Birmingham-Manchester-Leeds project, announced a shortlist of five: Bombardier Transportation, Hitachi Rail Europe, Alstom Transport, Siemens and Patentes Talgo.

The new locomotives will operate at speeds of up to 225mph and are meant to deliver speed and comfort, while providing additional passenger capacity between the UK's major cities.

Alstom has said it is "committed" to using its United Kingdom base in Widnes to support HS2 if it wins a £2.75bn contract to make trains for the project.

The new trains will operate at speeds of up to 225 miles per hour, HS2 said, adding that the rail project as a whole would create around 25,000 jobs.

The first trains will begin to roll off the production line in the early 2020s.

FIVE companies will compete for the chance to build 225mph trains for HS2 after being shortlisted for the contract.

HS2 Railway Operations managing director Chris Rayner said: "It's great to see such a strong line-up of experienced high-tech manufacturing and design talent".

"Starting from 2026, our trains will be used by tens of thousands of people every day, transforming links across the Midlands and the North and providing much-needed extra capacity between Britain's major cities".

They will also be created to meet the global standards for passenger experience, noise reduction and environmental sustainability.

The awarding of rail contracts to firms with overseas plants has been criticised in recent years.
