Former worker at Fort Leavenworth hospital sentenced for attack on supervisor

A former hospital worker at Fort Leavenworth received the maximum prison sentence for setting a corrections officer on fire.

Federal prosecutors say 55-year-old Clifford Currie of Leavenworth was sentenced Thursday for assault with intent to commit murder.

Prosecutors showed evidence during the trial that Currie threw gas or some other flammable liquid on his supervisor, Lieutenant Katie Ann Blanchard, on September 7, 2016.

Hospital employees were able to subdue Currie a short time later before being arrested.

In addition to prison time, he got three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $3,464,965.80 to the victim, Lt. Katie Ann Blanchard. He also attacked Blanchard, who was his supervisor, with a straight-edge razor and scissors.

The attack took place in Blanchard's office at the medical center, 550 Pope Ave., according to court documents.

A co-worker came to her aid when she heard Blanchard's screams and saw her on fire, while Currie was subdued by other hospital employees.
