Government Makes FASTag Mandatory For Cars From December 1

Government Makes FASTag Mandatory For Cars From December 1”

FASTags work mainly through radio-frequency identification (RFID) strips pasted on windscreens for contact-less passage in toll plazas on national highways.

The onus of buying a FASTag is not on the owner of the vehicle anymore and has been passed on to dealers and manufacturers.

Getting stuck in long queues while crossing toll plazas on National Highways is perhaps something we have all experienced at some point.

The move takes away the need for vehicle owners to buy the tags as they will now come with the auto.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a notification stating that all four wheelers sold in India from December 1, 2017 will have to be fitted with FASTags. FASTag is part of the National Highway Authority of India's (NHAI) programme for electronic toll collection on toll plazas on national highways. One may occasionally recharge it from time to time up to Rs 1 lakh. However, FASTag is not compulsory for existing vehicle owners. All vehicles sold will be fitted with the device.

It comes with a validity of 5 years and after purchasing it, the users need only to only recharge or top up as per their requirement, it added. More toll plazas will be brought under the FASTag program in the future. Notably, the system remains same at any of the toll plaza across the country under NHAI and vehicles can pass through any number of toll plazas as far as their balances allow. By using the tag, the commuters don't have to go through the hassles of stopping to pay for the toll tax.

Near non-stop movement of vehicles leading to lower fuel cost.

FASTag works like any other prepaid card.

Issuer Agency will electronically deduct the applicable toll fee from the customer's account linked to the FASTag. In fact, in August the NHAI also launched two mobile apps - MyFASTag for electronic toll collection and FASTag Partner for recharge of FASTags through mobile phones.
