Government recall covers 37.8 million Kidde fire extinguishers

Government recall covers 37.8 million Kidde fire extinguishers”

But after a recall of almost 38 million Kidde brand extinguishers, millions of homes aren't properly protected.

Models that were recalled between March 2009 through February 2015.

The extinguishers can fail to activate during a fire emergency due to clogs or requiring excessive force to discharge.

The Canadian government is expanding a recall of Kidde and Garrison brand fire extinguishers to cover some 2.7 million of the devices in Canada, including some that date back more than 40 years.

United Technologies Corp.'s Kidde unit is recalling more than 40 million fire extinguishers mainly in the United States, a US consumer safety agency said on Thursday, following reports that they failed to work and caused one death in 2014.

391 people reported a fault of some kind; 91 people reported property damage; 16 people received injuries; and at least 1 death is being blamed.

In 2014, Brendan Rosko died in a Pennsylvania vehicle crash after an extinguisher used by first responders malfunctioned. Kidde can be reached at (855) 271-0773 or at www.kidde.com.

Kidde, based in Mebane, N.C., near Raleigh, says it has worked closely with the government to start the recall and make sure the extinguishers are replaced with different models as quickly as possible. The company also makes smoke detectors and other fire safety products. The extinguishers were sold in red, white and silver, and are either ABC- or BC-rated.

The extinguishers were sold by Menards, Montgomery Ward, Sears, The Home Depot, Walmart and other department, home and hardware stores nationwide, and online at Amazon.com, ShopKidde.com and other online retailers for between $12 and $50 and for about $200 for model XL 5MR.

Certain models of extinguishers also come equipped inside commercial trucks, RVs, and personal watercraft like a boat of jet ski.
