Sessions Rejected Adviser's Proposal for Trump-Putin Meet

Sessions Rejected Adviser's Proposal for Trump-Putin Meet”

Sessions later recused himself from all matters related to the campaign, citing his support for the President's successful bid.

While he said he knew of no meetings between Page and Russians, he added, "There might be some published accounts of Mr. Page communicating with Russians, I don't know".

"Jeff Sessions concealed his meetings with the Russians and he had an obligation to be more forthcoming about meetings that involved Papadopoulos", said Sen.

Joseph Mifsud, who has been identified as the unnamed London professor who offered to set up meetings with Russian officials who could provide "thousands of emails" with damaging information about Trump's rival, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, is a vocal Putin backer with ties to several important institutions in Russia.

CNN reported on Wednesday that Sessions firmly rejected the idea of a meeting between Trump and Putin when it was floated during a campaign meeting in March 2016. "He didn't disclose that to the committee".

Heinrich told CNN that it begs the question of "whether he is being honest and forthright with the committee, and what does that mean for the highest law enforcement officer in the country?"

In a now-infamous exchange, Sessions, answering a question from Sen.

The Justice Department did not comment.

Court documents indicate Papadopolous was present at a meeting with Sessions and Trump in which he discussed arranging a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, he declined to say whether he thought Sessions lied and said he thought any decision on whether Sessions did something wrong should be left with special counsel Robert Mueller.

The inconsistency between Sessions' testimony and what we now know about the Trump campaign's contact with Russian Federation is particularly problematic for the attorney general, given that he was under oath.

He added, "He denied contact with Russian Federation in his confirmation hearing, and he met with Kislyak three times, he met with the ambassador three times, so that wasn't true". He later acknowledged that he met then-Russian ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak twice during the campaign. "Completely unrelated to my limited volunteer role with the campaign and as I've done dozens of times throughout my life". Also there were Trump and his son-in-law and White House senior adviser Jared Kushner.

A Senate source told CNN that lawmakers on both the Senate Intelligence and Judiciary Committees are expecting clarification from Sessions in the form of written amendment to his previous testimony or a fresh round of questioning. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, asked Sessions: "Did anybody in the campaign, did you ever overhear a conversation between you and anybody on the campaign who talked about meeting with the Russians?"

The former assistant said she believed Mifsud attended an annual gathering at the Valdai Club every year since 2014, an event which she said was usually frequented by Putin.
