Shocking Conditions In Rental Accommodation Revealed

Shocking Conditions In Rental Accommodation Revealed”

Nightmare to Let, an RTÉ Investigates documentary six months in the making, promised to deliver some shocking home truths about the rental market in Ireland and grim though some of those truths were, it certainly lived up to that promise on Thursday night.

Undercover researchers found dangerously overcrowded accommodation and sub-standard buildings with multiple fire safety breaches.

Just 2.4% of rental properties in Dublin were inspected by the city council previous year.

One property in Dublin visited by RTÉ housed 40 tenants across ten bedrooms.

Dublin City Council was informed of risky overcrowding at a property four times before a report was passed on to Dublin Fire Brigade.

The programme declared the latest figures to emerge from inspections in the rental sector showed problems were nationwide.

Under a freedom of information request from RTE, "Nightmare to Let" discovered that only 4% of the 325,000 rental properties in Ireland were inspected past year, a responsibility that lies with local councils.

Kilkenny, Louth and Limerick City and County also recorded 100% failure rates.

Aideen Hayden of Threshold said on the situation "is becoming significantly worse".

"These are situations that should not be tolerated in a humane society and it is an absolute failure on our part as a people".
