Teenager arrested after acid attack which may have permanently blinded delivery driver

Teenager arrested after acid attack which may have permanently blinded delivery driver”

Police say that acid attacks in London were once typically carried out by men against women close to them but are now predominantly used between young males, often in the context of urban gangs.

At around 6pm on Thursday on Walpole Road the victim was approached by two men who were on a scooter, Scotland Yard said.

Police said the possibility of the two incidents being linked is an "active line of inquiry" as detectives in Tottenham and Waltham Forest work together on the case.

A witness saw the man in his 30s struggling to get back inside the house he had just delivered to after he had been attacked by thugs on a moped in Walpole Road in Walthamstow, East London.

Around half an hour after the attack, a second person was also attacked with acid in Yarmouth Crescent, Tottenham.

A takeaway delivery driver has been left with life-threatening injuries after he was sprayed with acid during an attempted robbery.

Police, the ambulance service and the fire brigade all attended and the man was treated at the scene before being taken to an east London hospital.

This man, also a 32-year-old delivery driver, was approached by two men on a scooter who attempted to steal his moped and a corrosive substance was sprayed on his face.

A Met spokesman also said there had been no arrests in either attack but police were continuing to investigate.

Police confirmed this afternoon a teenage boy had been arrested on suspicion of GBH in connection with the attack.

'The victim, believed to be in his 30s, was treated at the scene and then taken to hospital for treatment.

"This attack has left a man fighting for his life and with awful eye injuries", Det Ch Insp Gordon Henderson said.

Food delivery drivers, who often work on mopeds, have become soft targets of acid attacks in the city.

The UK government announced plans in October to ban the sale of acid to minors and prevent people from carrying corrosive liquids in public, in response to the dramatic increase in attacks.
