A Lord Of The Rings TV Show Is Potentially Coming To Amazon”

The Lord of the Rings could be the next big TV adaptation.

Variety broke the news first that Amazon is negotiating with Warner Bros. and the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien to develop a Lord of the Rings TV series. Variety reports that the company is now in talks with Warner Bros. Warner Bros. previously produced the critically lauded Lord of the Rings saga, which was helmed by Peter Jackson, in addition to The Hobbit follow-up trilogy.

While The Lord of the Rings would certainly check all the Game of Thrones boxes when it comes to fantasy and adventure, it is also worth noting that the books aren't really known for being filled with the kind of sex-and-violence antics that HBO's show has become synonymous with. And with CEO Jeff Bezos directly involved with the talks, the potential seems all the more real. The project is still in its earliest stages, with no writer attached and plenty of issues with the Tolkien estate to be worked out before work could really begin.

The Tolkien estate and Warner Bros. have famously feuded since 2012 and settled an ongoing lawsuit earlier this year. The property is a multi-billion-dollar worldwide franchise.

The deal would be a huge get for Amazon Studios, which has already made a name for itself with its adaptations of The Handmaid's Tale and The Man in the High Castle, and has been wanting to make a move into larger-scale, wide-appeal original content recently. The retail giant and streaming platform has been on the hot-seat for its lack of a breakthrough hit, with Sharon Tal Yguado initially brought in to oversee a push for genre fare.

In anticipation of the programming push, Amazon Studios has been in the midst of cancelling a wave of programming including Z: The Beginning of Everything and The Last Tycoon. With Lewis' departure, Tal Yguado was named head of scripted series, reporting to Price's interim replacement, Amazon Studios COO Albert Cheng.
