German, Turkish diplomats meet to discuss 'difficult issues'”

According to a Turkish Foreign Ministry statement, the two leaders discussed bilateral issues and mutual expectations between Turkey and Germany.

Germany's foreign minister Siegmar Gabriel met his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu in Turkey on Saturday, in a chance to discuss strained ties between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies after a series of diplomatic incidents. Turkey has been accusing Germany of tolerating the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and its activities in its territories and of granting asylum and protection to the members of the Fethullahist Terror Organization (FETÖ) following the failed coup attempt past year.

Pictures showed the two men, dressed in jackets without ties, chatting informally under blue skies in Antalya, Cavusoglu's home region.

The freed detainee asked authorities not to release his or her identity, but the foreign ministry spokesman said that he or she had been released on October 22. Those held included journalists Deniz Yücel and Meşale Tolu.

Gabriel had last month thanked former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who retains warm personal ties with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for helping broker the releases.

A human rights activist was allowed to return to Germany, but others remain jailed.
