BMW recalls 1.4M vehicles due to fire risk”

German luxury auto manufacturer BMW has released two recalls covering over one million vehicles, including passenger cars and sport utility vehicles, said to be at risk of bursting into flame even when they are parked and the engine is off. It'll be more than a month before repairs start, but BMW encourages owners to keep their cars outside until then. In a statement released Friday, BMW also said the "incidents included in your report earlier this year spanned a range of 1-15 years with mileage of up to 232,250 miles and multiple generations of model types".

Although BMW has noted three injuries related to the first recall, and none connected with the second, a report by ABC News aired in May documented over 40 incidences over the last five years in which a parked and non-operating BMW burst into flames of its own accord. ".The safety of our customers is a top priority". ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCustomers with questions may contact BMW Customer Relations at 1-800-525-7417, or email CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com. Being recalled are some 740,000 BMW 1, 3 and 5-series cars, the Z4 sports vehicle and X3 and X5 SUVs from the 2007 through 2011 model years. In both recalls, repairs are expected to start on December 18. The heater for the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve may short circuit.

The overheated wiring can cause electrical connectors to melt, which can make for a fire risk "even when the vehicle is unattended".

The other recall covers almost 673,000 cars including the 323i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi and M3 from the 2006-2011 model years.

The reason for the recall is the blower-regulator wiring harness, which controls the fan speed of the blower motor, the part responsible for sending air through the vents.

In one instance, a malfunctioning heater valve can melt, and set off fires.

BMW says it will replace wiring and parts tied to the problem.
