Commuter chaos after London train 'shakes violently and derails' sparking delays

A South Western Railways - formerly South West Trains - commuter service from Basingstoke belonging to partially derailed as it left Wimbledon station at low speed just before 6am, the BBC reports.

Commuters into one of London's biggest transport hubs were bracing themselves for cancellations and delays this morning, after a train derailed in South West London.

Disruption is expected until the end of the day following the low-speed derailment, which happened near East Putney.

The London Fire Brigade confirmed that one person suffered minor injuries in the incident.

While the derailment has also scuppered District Line services between Parsons Green and Wimbledon.

Hammersmith and City line: Severe delays due to signal failure at Barking.

Elsewhere, a power surge along the Northern Line of the London Underground saw services grind to a halt.

Kentish Town has since reopened.

London Overground: No service between Surrey Quays and Wandsworth Road due to a track fault at Wandsworth Road.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said; "RMT awaits the facts behind the derailment this morning and our local reps are monitoring the situation on the ground".

District Line passengers can use their tickets on South Western Railway services via any reasonable route.

"That is the very issue that our members will be fighting over in their action this week".
