Oxford Street To Be Pedestrianised, Mayor Sadiq Khan Announces”

The introduction of the Elizabeth Line is expected to significantly increase visitor numbers in the area, according to Transport for London.

'Alongside the arrival of the Elizabeth Line, the Oxford Street area will be truly transformed over the coming years'.

There are some exceptions being proposed such as taxis being able to cross at Duke Street, Vere Street, Harewood Place and Stratford Place as well as talks about having an 800m-long work of public art.

If approved, the mayor believes, the plans would guarantee that the Oxford Street district retains its reputation as one of the world's best outdoor shopping experiences.

London mayor Sadiq Khan has described the publication of the plans as "a hugely exciting moment for the capital".

Large parts of central London's Oxford Street could be pedestrianised by December 2018, under plans put forward by London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

For example, the plans would see at least 25 new pedestrian crossings installed in the area, all of which will use energy-efficient LED lighting and have Pedestrian Countdown technology. To tackle the restrictions, Khan says new and improved cycle lanes will be built as well as black cab pick-up and drop-off points to ensure no business is lost from the tourist area.

City Hall released pictures of what they hope it will look like.

"The loss of taxi access to this section of Oxford Street will cause considerable inconvenience to disabled passengers, many of whom rely upon London's fully-accessible taxi fleet to get around safely and conveniently", said Richard Massett, Chairman of the Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association.

The plan is the first of three phases for the transformation of Oxford Street, to be followed by the stretch between Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road and then between Marble Arch and Orchard Street. "Removing the wall of red buses from Oxford Street will reduce congestion and improve air quality - improvements which must also be capitalised on across Regent Street, Bond Street and the wider West End".

TfL has already been working to slash the number of buses operating along Oxford Street by 40 per cent, and the opening of the Elizabeth Line will see that reduced to just two routes which will be redirected to operate along Wigmore Street, Henrietta Place and Cavendish Square.
