Unpaid Turkish clothes makers tag Zara items to seek help

Unpaid Turkish clothes makers tag Zara items to seek help”

Zara clothing has been used by factory workers in Istanbul to complain about unpaid wages.

Workers of an outsource manufacturer for Zara and other retailers have been going into Zara shops leaving tags inside clothes saying: "I made this item you are going to buy, but I didn't get paid for it".

In September of this year, 140 Bravo employees started a Change.org petition in which they asked Zara, Next, and Mango to pay the workers the wages they say have been withheld from them for more than a year. The tag calls on the shopper to pressure Zara into paying them and support their campaign.

A description alongside the petition says that by July 2016, workers had been denied a "huge proportion" of their wages. They allege they are owed three months of pay and severance.

It added: 'Creditors came to our factory and seized all machines and valuables.

The hardship fund will cover unpaid wages, unused vacation, notice indemnity and severance payments of workers affected by the fraudulent disappearance of the Bravo factory's owner.

According to the petition, the Bravo factory made clothes for Inditex, Zara's parent company.

Workers said they demand no more than their basic rights, and that brands give them the basic respect to compensate their labour. We call on the global community to support our struggle, sign and share to support our campaign!' In both 2011 and 2013, separate factories associated with the brand were reportedly investigated (and in some cases fined), for "degrading" factory conditions in Brazil and Argentina on claims that workers (some of whom were underage) were forced to work up to 16 hours a day.

MailOnline has approached Next and Mango for a comment.
