Brian Cashman talks Joe Girardi and managerial search

Girardi, who led the Yankees to a World Series title in 2009 and six playoff appearances, thought he would be back in NY but understood they wanted to go in a different direction.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman met the press today and talked a little about outgoing manager Joe Girardi, a good bit about what he's seeking in a new manager and the process by which that man will be found.

"The easiest call would be plug and play and continue in a safe harbor arena", Cashman said on a conference call. "When I saw that that wasn't happening to the level of I think that was necessary as we move forward, that's when the recommendation came by myself to Hal Steinbrenner". The retooled Yankees went 91-71 this season, their best record since 2012, defeated Minnesota in the AL wild-card game and overcame 2-0 deficit to beat Cleveland in a five-game Division Series.

Cashman spoke with reporters for almost an hour on Monday and said the biggest reason behind the franchise's decision was Girardi's inability to connect or communicate with his players. He also dismissed reports of a fractured relationship with Girardi in recent years.

Asked if a World Series would have meant a Girardi return, Cashman didn't directly answer, saying he wouldn't deal in hypotheticals.

Girardi, who had just completed a four-year contract worth $16million, took over the Yankees in 2008 and delivered a 27th World Series to the NY franchise the following year. You'd figure after a decade of service, Girardi - who says he wants to manage again - may have felt he was owed a standard "we just wanted to go in a different direction" comment from his old boss, but now he's been labeled as a guy with poor communication skills.

Girardi was at the end of his four-year contract. It's hard to imagine whom the team could've looked at and thought, Yes, here are some definitively solid upgrades over Joe Girardi. He replaced Joe Torre as Yankees manager before the 2008 season and went 910-710, leading NY to the 2009 World Series title and three first-place finishes in the AL East. Girardi's win total ranks sixth in franchise history, trailing only Joe McCarthy (1,460), Joe Torre (1,173), Casey Stengel (1,149), Miller Huggins (1,067) and Ralph Houk (944).

Cashman said there is no timetable for a replacement to be named, but he recognises the Yankees are "on the clock".

"Whoever the lead horse will be, hopefully they will be pretty obvious and they will win by 16 lengths, like Secretariat did", Cashman said.
