German Military Planners Prepare For 'Conceivable' Collapse of European Union by 2040”

The German army believes that the emergence of cracks in the European Union and an increase in global conflicts are one of six possible scenarios that may come true by 2040, writes Spiegel, quoted by Reuters.

One of the scenarios involves other EU nations following the UK's lead by choosing to exit the European bloc, resulting in a world that is "increasingly disorderly".

One of the possible options is: "EU enlargement is largely stopping, and more countries are leaving the bloc".

A separate scenario is titled "West to the East", in which East European EU countries-already in 2017 diverging politically from their western allies-begin to halt EU expansion, or depart the bloc altogether to join the "Eastern bloc", interpreted to indicate Russian Federation and its associated powers. The increasingly turbulent, sometimes chaotic and conflict-affected world dramatically changed the security policy of Germany and Europe.

A further two envisaged a more peaceful world.

German military strategists have envisioned six security "catastrophes" that could become a reality by 2040, Der Spiegel magazine said.

A Defence Ministry spokesman said on Sunday the study, labelled Strategic Perspective 2040, made "robust predictions" but did not attach probabilities to them or trigger decisions.

He would not make specific comments about the content of the confidential report.
